You can’t visit Italy without trying its exquisite coffee and you shouldn’t leave Rome without going to Giolitti . This wonderful café, full of genuine, old fashioned elegance is nested in a narrow alley, right in the center of Campo Marzio, very close to Piazza della Rotonda and Piazza Colonna. Giolitti is very popular with locals, in fact during weekends you’ll find long queues waiting for its great tasting ice cream in a very big selection of flavours, some as unusual as Limoncello, Champagne, Baileys or Canella ( cinnamon ). You really should try as many as you can, either take away or sit in the luxurious, big hall with the Murano chandeliers. If you prefer to sit in, you can also chose one of their suggested cups of ice cream, the Copa Olympica which I once had was enormous – hence the name ( Compare the size of the ice cream to that of the glass in the photo!!! ) ! They also serve other delicious sweets, paninis and all kinds of coffee. On warm days, it’s always pleasant sitting at the small tables outside, right on the street, watching people go by, most of them with a cone of Giolitti gelato in hand.
